General contractor in Pasadena, CA

Pasadena is next door to our San Marino office, and we have been remodeling bathrooms in its older homes for years. Building in Pasadena often means a historic district, a hillside overlay or a protected tree, and each one adds a step before the building permit.

Building in Pasadena: what to know.

Permits are online

New construction, ADUs, additions and tenant improvements are all submitted through the city's Citizen Self-Service permit portal, and the Permit Center is at 175 N. Garfield Avenue.

Standard ADU plans changed this year

Pasadena's original standard ADU plans expired at the end of 2025. A free 374 square foot studio plan now works on most single-family lots citywide, while the larger plans are limited to homes red-tagged in the Eaton fire. None can be modified, and none are for hillside lots.

Historic districts come first

In a landmark district such as Bungalow Heaven, Historic Highlands or Washington Square, exterior work visible from the street, new construction and demolition all need a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit is issued.

Native trees need a permit

In single-family zones, native trees over 8 inches across, including oaks, sycamores, California walnut and bay, cannot be removed from the front, side or rear yard setbacks without a permit.
